NEW ZEALAND – SINGAPORE (one night Singapore)
Days 1-2: We depart New Zealand bound for Singapore and a one night stop before continuing directly to Paris, renowned for its classic style and arguably still the capital of couture.
SINGAPORE – PARIS (three nights Paris)
Day 3: On arrival in Paris we meet our local guide and see the Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, Louvre and Notre Dame before making our way to our hotel for a midday check-in. After lunch nearby we head up to the 2nd level of the Eiffel Tower).
Day 4: Today we enjoy entry into the Louvre Museum; afterwards we will take a drive up to the Montmartre area of Paris before the rest of the day is at leisure until our evening illuminations tour.
Day 5: Full day at leisure (optional Moulin Rouge tonight).
PARIS - LOIRE VALLEY – TOURS (one night Tours)
Day 6: Travelling via the beautiful Loire Valley today we visit the jewel of the French Renaissance, Chateau Chambord, and the 16th-century chateau of Catherine de Medici, lovely Chenonceau. Traveling on to Amboise, we visit Clos Luce and marvel at an amazing collection of models of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions, painstakingly reconstructed from the drawings of the great Renaissance genius.
TOURS – LA ROCHELLE (one night La Rochelle)
Day 7: Leaving Tours this morning we make our way via the beautiful gardens of Villandry where we’ll have time to wander before we continue to the quaint town of La Rochelle on the French coast.
LA ROCHELLE – SAN SEBASTIAN (two nights San Sebastian)
Day 8: Departing this morning we make our way to San Sebastian arriving early afternoon in time for a dip in the beautiful Bay of Biscay, true Basque country, before dinner this evening. The Basques are renowned for their enthusiasm and energy, and their beaches are some of the finest in Europe. Welcome to Spain.
Day 9: Today is at leisure.
SAN SEBASTIAN – BILBAO – MADRID (two nights Madrid)
Day 10: Today we travel from San Sebastian to Madrid, via Bilbao where we will enjoy a visit to the Guggenheim Museum to marvel at the many galleries featuring the very best in modern and contemporary art from around the world. During our time in Madrid, Spain’s capital and home to some 3 million residents, we’ll see some of the famous Basilica’s and monuments, the 18th Century Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor amongst other things. We will also visit one of the world’s leading museums of contemporary art, the Reina Sofia, a museum and art gallery with one of the world’s finest collections of European art.
Day 11: Today we have a half day sightseeing tour in Madrid. We’ll see the Cervantes Memorial, Cibeles Fountain, Plaza de Espana, Gran Via, Puerta Del Sol and Parque de Retiror. Tonight we have a special treat, dinner out at a local restaurant with traditional entertainment.
MADRID – TOLEDO – CACERES (one night Caceres)
Day 12: We leave Madrid and travel to Caceres via Toledo, including brief sightseeing. Caceres, a city with many religious identities and recognised for this in its architecture by a UNESCO world heritage rating in 1986, with Roman, Jewish, Muslim and Christian influences evident throughout the city.
CACERES – LISBON( two nights Lisbon)
Day 13: A fascinating day lays ahead as we make our way to Lisbon via Castelo de Vide, a pretty hillside town with medieval flair. At the top of the hill is a 14th Century castle which overlooks the town and rewards the energetic with breathtaking views.
Day 14: Our sightseeing today, with a local guide, features Belem Tower, guarding the mouth of the Tagus, and Jeronimos Monastery, with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. We’ll drive past the Bull Ring to Pombal Statue and along the grand Avenida da Liberdade. Then, we’ll enjoy a walk through the cobbled alleys of quaint Alfama, the quarter of the seamen.
LISBON – FARO (two nights Faro)
Days 15-16: After a leisurely rise we head south to the Algarve region, crossing the Bridge of April 25th. The coastline is dotted with many beautiful beaches and has a long interesting history including a building reputed to be Europe’s first recorded slave market dating back to around 1445. There’ll be time to sun and swim, and relax with a refreshing drink in the town square.
SEVILLE (two nights Seville)
Days 17-18: We venture East toward Seville and our home for the next two nights. Legend has it that Hercules founded the city, the administrative capital of the Andalucian region which boasts up to 320 days of sunshine a year! We’ll visit the imposing Alcazar Palace, the towering minaret of Giralda, and the Santa Cruz quarter with its beautiful flower boxes and vibrantly decorated facades. We’ll take a trip to captivating Cordoba to see the incredible Mezquita, and capture the Spanish passion at a Flamenco show tonight (optional).
SEVILLE - ROCK OF GIBRALTAR - TORREMOLINOS (two nights Torremolinos)
Days 19-20: Much has been spoken about the stunning Costa del Sol, the name itself is an indication of the appeal of this region. En-route we’ll visit the invincible Rock of Gibraltar. Still under British sovereignty the ‘Rock’ once housed as many as 30,000 servicemen during the early stages of WWll, and its network of extensive tunnels and covert nature during wartime has been the subject of many stories. After Gibraltar we move on to Marbella, and time to soak up some sun on the Costa del Sol.
TORREMOLINOS – GRENADA (one night Granada)
Day 21: Today we depart for Granada. If known for one thing alone it would have to be the incredible Alhambra Palace, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th Century. At the centre of the Alhambra stands the massive Palace of Charles V, an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.
GRENADA – VALENCIA (two nights Valencia)
Day 22: We’re en-route to Valencia today, immortalised as ‘the land of flowers’ in a song, it embodies the synergy between the present and the past. From the incredible ‘City of Arts & Sciences’ building to the magnificent Town Hall. It is sometimes remembered as the place where NZ didn’t win the America’s Cup. Day 23: A special day today as we visit the home of one of the world’s most recognised brands of fine ceramics, Lladro, and have a full tour behind the scenes. The afternoon is at leisure.
VALENCIA – BARCELONA (barcelona three nights)
Barcelona Days 24-25: The final leg of our overland journey begins today as we make our way to Barcelona. Gaudi and Barcelona are synonymous; no visit to Spain would be complete without a visit to his famously incomplete ‘Sagrada Familia’ Cathedral and spectacular Parc Guell. We’ll have time to stroll along Las Ramblas, a pedestrian only mall lined with markets, shops and places to eat and drink. Fittingly, at the end of the mall is a statue of Colombus pointing to the Americas, sadly however he’s pointing the wrong way, but it’s a reminder that we too must begin our journey homeward.
Day 26: A free day to look around at your leisure and tonight we dine at a special location for our farewell dinner. (Optional: day trip to Carcassonne.)
BARCELONA – SINGAPORE - NEW ZEALAND
Days 27-30: We depart Barcelona bound for Singapore, with a brief two day stopover to assist us in arriving home feeling refreshed, and with wonderful memories etched upon our minds.
